I want to start this blog in similar fashion that I start many of my posts—by stating that the Internet is in its infancy. I believe the reason the Internet was invented was to allow us to live a more free, fulfilling and present life.
Search engine marketing, social media campaigns that listen and publishing original content to your website on a consistent basis. Is that really the answer to marketing for small business in 2016?
In today’s day and age (arguably but not really) it is. Not only that you have to pick and choose which search engine or “social network” you want to pay to play. But what small business just starting out has time to figure out all that stuff when they’re busy learning how to be a business owner in the first place?
We live in a society that’s not inviting of hardworking small business owners to succeed with online marketing.
The Real Problem
The real problem with web design today is that the company building your website isn’t the same company that’s organizing and structuring all the data.
Google, Yahoo and Bing have created genius databases to search on and display the best search result for you. The problem is if you want your business to appear in search results locally you have to create a profile with them so they know who and where you are. It’s the start of their indexing process for generating the best and fastest search result for normal people hoping to find you online.
Facebook doesn’t have quite the same problem because your business likely already has a page on their website–they have all the data already, Google, Yahoo and BING don’t until you create a profile with them.
Here’s where Facebook laughs all the way to the bank.
…Still laughing..
How Did They Do It? And How Do We?
Facebook created a P2P network that didn’t end the party at 11 until they grew to the point they could invite (pivot) the heavy hitters– so the party didn’t ever have to end. (They saw how awesome the it was, and now they fund it)
This doesn’t make it easy for small business today who live in a world of person-to-person networks. What we need is a new social network. A social network made by small business, for small business (B2B) right from the start.
What am I talking about?
Am I crazy? No, I just imagine a world without search engines. A world where everyone is using the Internet for the true purpose it was brought to us. A world that doesn’t have their faces in their smartphones 60% of the time they’re awake. A world where people can consume content when and where they want to consume it, from sources they already know and trust. To fix the real problem with web design would mean creating a world like this.
